But most cable/DSL router/gateway appliances do the pppoe cruft for you,
these days. I lean mostly toward Netgear these days, with D-link as a
fallback. I rarely touch Cisco-junior stuff, except to replace it. This
is much like the one that sits between my home systems and the cable modem:

That specifies PPPoE in its range of capabilities. Then you don't need
to futz with that on the Linux side of the fence.
You could also use one of the wireless units if you like. Just lock it
down hard if you set one of those up.
