My Comcast cable modem has an ethernet port on the back.  You could (theoretically) plug it straight into your computer's network card with a crossover cable.  I'd recommend that you use a router/firewall though (that's what I do).  At any rate, there are no special drivers needed.  If you use a DSL modem, you probably need to set up pppoe, but I can't really comment on that since I've never had a DSL modem.
