The two most popular standards for HDTV are called 720p and 1080i. The
former is 1280x720. The latter is 1920x1080. Many "high-def" television
sets that are sold today can display only up to 1280x720; when given a
1080i image, they scale it to fit on the screen.

I watch HDTV on my PC at 1600x1200, so 1080i shows are scaled to fit.
They still look gorgeous.
