be advised that the author of g4u has pretty compelling proof
that the guy who "wrote" g4l simply grabbed and reused a large
part of the g4u code, but refuses to acknowledge the fact under
the terms of the BDS license under which g4u was released. i
guess it depends how much you care about licensing in the open
source world whether this bothers you or not.

most of these do the majority of their diagnostics using
SMART, which is built into most hard drives these days.
smarttools will give you much if not all of the info that
the vendor software will.
