Xine is the obvious alternative.  It's what I normally use for
interactive playback of video files and DVDs.

There's also VLC, gstreamer and others, but I don't know much about
them.

It may depend on what you were doing with it.  If you're used to using
mplayer and mencoder to capture and process video data rather than
simply play it back, I don't know if there's anything else as flexible
and controllable.
