a few years ago a friend of mine leased the torque game engine, the
engine behind Tribes 2. I played with the level builder software it
came with. i also modeled a few items using worldbuilder and milkshape
in vmware, and with blender in linux. this was a long time ago, so i
dont have much to say on it. the game engine appears to still be
available, and still for the same price: garagegames.com.
