[CALUG] Best book to learn Linux with.

When I was getting started with Linux just a few years ago, I found the
internet much better than any books for learning the basics getting started
(I have an O'Reilly Safari account too, so I have LOTS of books
"available"). The best site I found for starting out is The Linux
Documentation Project (http://www.tldp.org), especially the Guides (
http://www.tldp.org/guides.html). The "Introduction to Linux Hands on Guide"
(http://www.tldp.org/LDP/intro-linux/html/index.html) is perfect for getting
started, then he can move on to the Administrator's Guide and from there any
of the other Guides or HowTo's for specific things he needs to learn.

Once I got familiar with how *nix systems work in general, I took a crack at
"Linux from Scratch" (http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/) and built my own
distribution. Not much else out there that can give you a more hands-on,
indepth look at how a linux system works from the ground up. Even if a lot
of what's going on is over his head (was for me the first time I did it too)
it still gives you a good idea how every linux distro out there works
basically.

After he gets through that stuff, then maybe it's time to look at some
actual physical books, being a little more focused on specific things he may
need to know. No reason to spend any money yet with the good ol' internet
around. :)
