Tonight, someone asked me what Python book I liked. My favorite book
when learning Python was "Python Essential Reference, Second Edition",
by David M. Beazley, New Riders, ISBN 0-7357-1091-0, published 2001.
It's dated now, I'm not sure if there's a newer version. Although it
claims to be a reference, it does start with a short tutorial. Coming
from a C++ background, I found it very helpful.

Hope that helps.
