First, grab a bunch of floppies and start formatting them with
"fdformat" as root.  If they're old ones, don't be suprized if you get
a few duds.  If they're new, they should all format good -- otherwize,
that drive has problems.
Second, if you can boot off of the CD drive, forget floppies and burn
yourself a copy of Damn Small Linux or Knoppix.
